On Sunday January 29, Los Angeles hosted the Sag (Screen Actors Guild) Awards, the awards dedicated only to actors and actresses of tv series and movies, indeed not including other categories. A sort of a small Oscars ceremony (click here to see the nominations while waiting for February 24) where 16 statuettes were delivered during the evening event.
As for the cinema, awards went to “Hidden Figures” for best cast, to Denzel Washington and Emma Stone for best protagonist actor/actress (respectively for “Fences” and “LalaLand“), to Mahershala Ali and Viola Davis for best non-protagonist actor/actress
(the first for “Moonlight” and the second for “Fences“).
In the tv category, the award for best cast was won by “Stranger Things” as drama series and by “Orange is the new black” as comedy series; “The crown” won for both best actor and actress in a drama series (John Lihtgow and Claire Foy), while in the comedy category William H. Macy won as best actor for “Shameless” and Julia Louis-Dreyfus as best actress for “Veep“. Bryan Cranston and Sarah Paulson won the award as best actor and actress in a miniseries, the first one for “All the way” and the second one for “The people v.O.J. Simpson“.
The special career award went to Lily Tomlin.
Overall, the evening was surprising and very “politic”: more than a few actors protested against the Trump’s ban against immigration; Kerry Washington for example claimed: “Many people say we shouldn’t express our political thought because we are actors, but we are also activists, and we care about the destiny fo humanity and world“. Mahershala Ali gave a beautiful speech on the importance of love and the importance of protecting refugees to not make them feel excluded, while David k. Harbour, with great enthusiasm, said that you must contrast with your heart and soul (and fight eventually) whoever tries to destroy your dreams.
The importance of putting aside differences and act as united humanity has been reaffirmed several times and in several ways during the evening.
Surprises came also from the looks worn on the red carpet: the classic style was alternated to some impressive dresses, there was a wide range of colors seen during the event and we can definitely say that beauty was everywhere last night, like any self-respecting award ceremony.
