The CFDA awards 2017 were held on the evening of 4th June in New York set up by the CFDA (Council of Fashion Designers of America), founded in the 1960s to promote fashion design as an integral part of American culture and that since 1984 has established this recognition to reward the personalities that have distinguished themselves in the fashion world. They have gained such an importance that are also referred to as “the Oscars of fashion“.
Raf Simons (creative director of Calvin Klein) was awarded both for the title of Womenswear Designer of the Year and for Menswear designer of the Year, the second in history to have obtained both awards after… Calvin Klein himself, what a coincidence! The one for Accessories Designer of the Year went to Stuart Vevers for Coach.
Demna Gvasalia, on the other hand, received the International Award for his work at Vetements and Balenciaga, while the emerging designers, recipients of the Swarovski Award, were Fernando Garcia and Laura Kim for Monse.
The most emotional part of the evening was the posthumous recognition to Franca Sozzani, who passed away last December, as Fashion Icon of the Year: Anna Wintour gave a personal and touching speech in memory of her colleague and friend, quoting the strength, beauty and immense contribution she had given to the fashion and journalism sector.
Like any important red carpet, and perhaps even more on this occasion, the parade of guests took place in the sign of beauty: models, actresses, stylists and influential personalities gave the best of themselves with dresses and suits worthy of note for their uniqueness and sensuality.
