Seven years of love, adventures, tears and many other emotions. “Sons of Anarchy” has been one of the most beautiful and important series of the TV series golden age, becoming one of the shows of worship both for fans and actors themselves.
Four years after that masterpiece that was the finale, Kurt Sutter, the father of SAMCROs, decided to get back in the saddle with the long-awaited spin-off “Mayans MC.” In the spotlight, we’ll see the Mexican charters that we already met in “SOA.” Among these, we’ll find “Riz” Ariza, played by Antonio Jaramillo, with whom we talked about it in our interview!
_______________
Re-launching such an important universe like the “Sons of Anarchy” one must not be an easy job. Did you feel this “burden” while filming it?
_______________
This is going to be such an iconic show! Being the spinoff of SOA, it’s not a small thing; and there is definitely a lot of pressure because we have to honor that world and the fans while at the same time creating our own world as Mayans MC!
_______________
“Mayans MC” is set after the Teller’s saga, can you tell us if it will be connected in any way to “SOA,” or it will be completely untied?
_______________
The saga continues! This terrific, imaginary world that Kurt Sutter first created with SOA and now with “Mayans MC” will no doubt be connected and intertwined with the original and at the same time, it will carve its own path.
_______________
Considering the importance and the fame that Kurt Sutter gained with his previous work, “Mayans MC” will certainly have a huge catchment area. How important do you think it is, at this moment, to create Latino heroes for the American and international society?
_______________
I think the fact that the cast is almost entirely Hispanic is such a huge thing! A very important one in fact as we are experiencing a lot of divisiveness in our Country right now. We need this kind of show! Perhaps it will help diminish some tension while at the same time entertain people!
_______________
Over the last five Academy Awards editions, 3 Mexican director won four Oscars, what is the meaning of these wins for the Latino people?
_______________
The fact that over the last few years we have had 3 Mexican directors win Oscars (Alfonso Cuarón, Alejandro G. Inarritu –twice– and Guillermo Del Toro) is huge! Very important for our people! Me being Mexican too, it makes me very proud and I hope one day to get the opportunity to work with any or all of them.
“…the fact that the cast is almost entirely Hispanic is such a huge thing! A very important one in fact as we are experiencing a lot of divisiveness in our Country right now.”
_______________
One of your first jobs was dubbing Javier Escuella’s character in “Red Dead Redemption.” Do you think that there will be any chance for a film adaptation for such a great video game? In that case, would you like to play Escuella also on the big screen?
_______________
Being a part of “Red Dead Redemption” was super cool and if it ever became a film and they would like to have me back as Javier Escuella? I would gladly accept that!
_______________
What’s your take on the trend of creating movies based on video games? In your opinion, can these movies become a new boost for the film industry like the superhero ones?
_______________
Video games are super cool and there is definitely room in our industry for some of these to become iconic movies but they will need a good script/story behind them.
_______________
Which way of working makes you feel more comfortable: dubbing, cinema or theater?
_______________
TV? Film? Dubbing? Theatre? I enjoy all of them! They are all fun and exciting but it comes down to the story you are trying to tell. The quality of the writing and the creative team involved.
_______________
What’s the last Series you binge-watched?
_______________
“House Of Cards“! Love that show… the writing, the cast, the production of it.
_______________
What was the last movie you saw that you really liked?
_______________
Ethan Hawke in the Chet Baker story “Born To Be Blue“! Such a cool movie and what a terrific artist, actor he is; that’s the kind of career I want! I dig him and his work a lot!
_______________
What’s your favorite quote?
_______________
“If you are going through hell….keep going” Winston Churchill.
_______________
What’s your dream project?
_______________
Perhaps a movie directed by Alfonso? Alejandro? Or Guillermo? Or to be reunited with my brother from another mother? Benicio Del Toro! I would love to work with him again. Perhaps we can do a ” Savages” sequel?
_______________
What’s next for you?
_______________
Right now I am all in as Michael “Riz” Ariza in “Mayans MC”! Although, I would like to continue doing live theatre – I love it! Whenever possible. In fact, I would like to be on Broadway one day in the near future!
My brother from another mother,
Love this guy. Really looking forward to following more of his work. Want to see more of him as Riz on Mayans MC. #RizLocz #MayansMC 😍
